I enjoy the preparatory elements of travel – packing my bags and choosing my outfits – but my favourite part is getting there. – Dominic Monaghan
In April of this year (2018), I went on a mini-vacation to the Cayman Islands. This was only a one-week getaway, but, it was packed full of fun and enjoyment. Nevertheless, the details of what happened in the Cayman Islands is for another post. Today I'll be going over the packing list that I tailored to my needs this trip.
If you were to ask any of my friends, you would know that once I have a trip planned I tend to pack way in advance, and I don't mean just a few days, no, sometimes it is even months beforehand. With that being said, this expedition was no different. I started packing even before I was sure I would be going.
The Essentials
1. Travel Documents.
When flying, boating or even driving out of a country, there is a necessity for the important government documents that will enable you to leave your home country and enter a host country. One must ensure that all documents are up to date. Keep these documents in a safe easily accessible (to you), place. These include your passport, flight ticket and visa, if applicable.
2. Medication.
Now, this is important for those who take prescription medication and even for those who use over the counter meds. If you need medication for any type of illness, it is imperative that you bring your medicine along with you for the excursion. You may be going for a fun time but remember it is not fun to be ill especially when there was a way to prevent it.
3. Clothing.
Though this may be a no-brainer for many, it doesn't hurt to mention the bare necessities. What is more essential than clothing? The climate in the Cayman Islands is tropical and requires garb made from breathable fabric such as cotton. Light and airy outfits are most suitable for this country as it can get very hot in this sweltering region.
4. Sunscreen, moisturiser and lip balm.
Since the Cayman's is a tropical zone, one must be prepared for stifling heat and consistent sunshine. With that being said Sunscreen will help to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, while a good moisturiser will keep your skin from drying out. Don't forget the lips! With the drying heat, lips are more prone to drying and cracking.
5. Camera/Phone.
Going on vacation plausibly means that not everyone you know will be there to enjoy the time away with you. In order to capture and share these cheerful instances, a camera or cell phone with picture capabilities would come in handy. A Digital or Polaroid camera can both be useful in this situation.
Non-Essentials
6. Gifts.
If you have friends or family in the Island or country you are visiting, then you may want to take a token or two along with you for them. It can just be a gift given for the sake of giving. It can also be a gift given as a token of appreciation. The latter may be due to the fact that you will be staying with the individual.
There you have it! A few of the things I pack for a Caribbean escape.
