International literacy day 2018

Every Child Can Learn, Every Child Must Learn...

Last week I was asked by my mother to attend, with her, the 2018 celebration of International Literacy Day. As some of you may know my mother is a Regional Literacy Coordinator for the Ministry of Education, Region 5. Region 5 refers to Manchester and St. Elizabeth. This year her region as well as regions 3 and 4, St. Ann, Trelawny and St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland respectively, organised the ILD celebrations. So, of course, when she asked if I would accompany her I said yes. I mean, who would pass up a road trip? I’ve been stuck in the house for almost two months!

What is International Literacy Day?

Every year since 1966, September 8th is celebrated as International Literacy Day. Founded by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this day is a means to raise awareness globally on the issues surrounding adult and child literacy. ILD is a part of the UN's sustainable development goals program adopted in 2015 and is used to highlight the changes and improvements being made worldwide in literacy development.
